Tip Spotlight - Vision Therapy

What is Vision Therapy?

I am not a Doctor and I do not work for Vision Therapy.  I am only a parent who took his child through the Vision Therapy.  Vision Therapy is a non surgical therapy for eyes and the brain.  It works on common vision problems as well as it helped our children with reading / writing, sports, grades, and behavior.  Results are going to vary and you will have to find out more through your Doctor.

What does it have to do with ADD or ADHD?

Some of the symptoms of ADD and ADHD our children had were treatable through Vision Therapy.

Who else can benefit?

Anyone with common vision problems, adults, and children.

What if my child has not been diagnosed?

Consult your doctor before you provide any treatment!

What if my child has been diagnosed?

Our children were both diagnosed with ADHD.  We were not happy medicating them because of some of the side affects to the drugs.  We have seen other children on this medication and some looked like zombies with the life sucked out of them.   We wanted other options and through research found out about Vision Therapy.  Some children might need medication.

Does it work?

Like anything you get what you put in.  If you stick to the program it will work.  Our sons now enjoy good grades, and we enjoy improved behavior from them.  They seem to do better at sports and have more self confidence.

What to expect?

  • You might have to pay for it, always check with  your insurance first.
  • You might not have a clinic in your area so you might have to drive out of town.
  • Appointments can be 2-5 times per week at a half hour to an hour.
  • You might also have to postpone some things in order to complete Vision Therapy.
  • Your first appointment will be a diagnostic appointment with a series of tests.  You will have an evaluation done after to discuss the results.

How do I locate offices in my area?

We found an office locally through the yellow pages.  You might have to fill out a survey first but you can search from the Vision Therapy Directory or Optometrist Network the links are as follows:

What does it cost?

Our cost was $1,500+ for one child.  You will have to call  your insurance company to see if they will cover some or all of the cost.

How much time is involved?

2-3 Months depending on what program and how aggressive you approach it.

Where can I find out more information?

Through the Vision Therapy Website - this site will help you locate a Vision Therapy Doctor, answer questions, and go into more detail about the process and what Vision Therapy is.

If you have went through Vision Therapy or know someone who has I encourage you to spread the word and tell others about it.  We have told ten families so far and have been getting positive feedback from it.
