General tips for saving at the pump that will put money back in
your wallet no matter what the prices are at that the pump!
1) Change your air filter in your car! If you cannot shine a
flashlight through it, it is too dirty and needs to be replaced.
2) Inflate your tires to correct PSI. Check your tires they
will tell you what they can be inflated to. Low tires will
consume more gas!
3) Change your oil. Keeping regular oil changes will keep
performance at its peak!
4) Tune up your engine. Check your owners manual for when your
first tune-up should be. Most mechanic places recommend every
60-90,000 miles.
5) Slow down! Drive the speed limit, most cars are rated
highway 55 miles per hour, which your gas rating is based off of.
6) Fill up when its cold. You tend to get more gas.
7) Take out the dead weight! The heavier your car is the more
gas you will use. Some of us could stand to lose a few pounds
anyway!
8) Car pool when you can!
9) Google maps can allow you to customize your trips. That can
save you time and gas! Plot out your destination. Even
our delivery drivers plan out the delivery route the night before.
10) Ask if the station offers a cash discount. Sometimes
stations will knock off five cents on a gallon if you pay with cash.
11) Sign up for fuel rewards, what can it hurt? Often shopping
centers will offer discounts if you spend a certain amount in the
store.
12) Higher octane rating doesn't mean its better. You can save
money on gas by switching to regular instead of premium.
Unless your vehicle calls for it - or you vehicle knocks, or
hesitates, switch to regular.
13) There are differences in gas. I am a big fan of Chevron and
I will use Tesoro if there is no Chevron around. My vehicles
just seem to run better on these fuels.
14) Turn off the air conditioner when there is no need. Wind
resistance can lower fuel savings but if you keep your car in fairly
good shape you shouldn't have a problem. Mythbusters busted
the myth that air conditioning uses more fuel than having your
windows down it was actually about the same.
15) Cruise control. I believe that you use more gas with cruise
control but lately I have been hearing conflicting reports.
Check it out for your self and email me when you have the answer.
